Privacy & data protection
Privacy Notice
This notice explains how personal data is handled when you sign or use the Swiss Petition website.
Data controller
Pre-launch requirement: insert the petition administrator's legal name and postal address here before public launch. Privacy enquiries: privacy@swiss-petition.org.
Information we collect
When you sign, we collect your full name, residential street/house number, postal code, city/municipality and country. Email and phone are optional. We also record the signing time, signature reference, petition and consent versions, IP address, browser/device information, user agent and relevant security logs.
Why we process it
We process this information to record and administer petition support, create an electronic signing audit trail, prepare and submit the petition, protect the integrity and security of the service, and detect duplicate, fraudulent or abusive submissions. If you provide an email address, we may send a confirmation of your recorded signature.
Political-opinion information
Supporting a political petition may reveal or allow inferences about political opinions. Access to signature data should therefore be restricted to authorised administration and protected with appropriate technical and organisational safeguards.
Recipients
Information reasonably necessary to evidence support may be supplied to the President of the Swiss Confederation, the Swiss Federal Council, the Federal Chancellery, relevant federal departments or authorities, and other competent Swiss public authorities or institutions responsible for considering or handling the petition. Technical audit data such as IP and browser information is not ordinarily included in the petition submission and is retained for integrity, security and dispute-handling purposes.
Public disclosure
Individual names, addresses, contact details and signing audit records are not published on the public website. The website may publish an aggregate signature count.
Service providers and international processing
Pre-launch requirement: list the actual hosting, database, email, security/CDN and other material service providers, their processing locations, and any safeguards used for processing outside Switzerland.
Retention
Personal data should be kept only for as long as reasonably necessary for petition administration and submission, integrity and security, dispute handling and applicable legal obligations. Pre-launch requirement: publish the final retention periods or the criteria used to determine them.
Your requests
You may contact privacy@swiss-petition.org concerning access, correction, deletion or other applicable data-protection rights. If information has already been lawfully submitted to a public authority, the petition administrator may not be able to retrieve or delete copies retained by that authority.
Security
The production deployment should use HTTPS, restricted administrator access, secure secrets, database access controls, backups, audit logging and appropriate monitoring. No internet service can promise absolute security.
Draft version: 15 August 2026 · Must be completed with controller/provider/retention details before launch.
